Old habits die hard.

"So, I've decided next time I run into Cute Neighbor Boy, I'm going to actually strike up a conversation with him rather than just smiling and waving," I told my friend during our coffee break at work today. "I mean, you can only smile and wave so many times before they stop thinking that you are a nice person and start wondering if maybe you're slightly touched in the head."

And that was my plan, because why shouldn't I? What was stopping me? I'm an interesting person; I'm funny, I'm clever, I'm well-read and articulate. It would be nice to have a friend in the building, not to mention he fits perfectly into My Type of Guy (skinny, pale, nerdy with glasses and usually carrying a book). And even if nothing came of it at least I would be actively working towards be more sociable and less of a shut-in.

When I came home from work this afternoon, I passed him in the hallway.

I smiled and waved.
