Wake-up call

My friend, the one who is going through all the unspeakable drama right now, has become my new roommate. Since he and his wife split up and his parents' home is a crime scene, he needed a place to stay. Since my last roommate left me high and dry with the rent (as well as a very nice couch and armchair), I needed a new roommate.

I was a little concerned about living with a guy. After all, this was the guy who belived the best way to deal with a grimy, moldy shower was to bathe with the lights off. But that was years ago, and I really really can't afford to pay full rent again.

And then this morning, around 6:30 I woke up to someone pounding on the door. A quick glace through the peephole, I saw a hooded sweatshirt and assumed it was the new roommate who had forgotten his key. Half-asleep and fully bedheaded, I open the door to find a complete stranger trying to get into my apartment.

My first instinct was to slam the door in his face and lock it, which I did. My second instinct was to have a cigarette and a beer to calm my nerves, which I did not do. The guy kept pounding on the door, and I suddenly felt how alone and vulnerable I really am, and suddenly I didn't mind so much having a roommate who is very big and very male. In fact, I kind of wanted many large male roommates; roommates with large mean dogs and stun guns.

After a hysterical call to my parents' and to the cops (in that order, because I'm not just a dumbass, but a pathetic dumbass), the guy wandered away. And I'm wide awake before 8:00 on my day off, waiting for the new roommate to come home.
